The N Story
Born in Namyang, Honed at Nürburgring
N’s mission is to push the limits of performance to help drivers discover how fun driving can be. With that in mind, Hyundai has revealed the N Brand’s new brand claim, ‘Never Just Drive.’ This claim fully captures the N mindset and spirit: “Do more than simply drive. Enjoy every second of it.” Since its debut in 2013, the N brand has built a fervent following with its winning combination of everyday sports cars and its rapid rise in rally and customer racing.
‘N’ represents two important elements.
The N brand is growing rapidly, launching more N & N-line products. Hyundai unveiled two N models through global premieres this year.
Kona N & Elantra N complete the N brand lineup of ‘Everyday sports cars’
The all-new KONA N is the ‘True Hot SUV’ possessing racetrack capability and the versatility of a utility vehicle. It breaks the rule that SUVs are less fun to drive. As an N model, it goes beyond the limits of an ordinary SUV.
The powertrain delivers a maximum output of 280 PS/40.0 kg-m. With N Grin Shift, the power is enhanced to 290 PS, maximizing driving fun. KONA N has a maximum speed of 240 km/h and can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 5.5 seconds, when Launch Control is activated.
KONA N received positive feedbacks from European media for its performance in ‘Kona N Driving Experience’ held in July.
Auto motor sport of Germany pointed out that “Driving pleasure guaranteed.” Likewise, Die Welt of Germany emphasized that “the Kona N offers endless driving fun.” Quattroruote of Italy illustrated KONA N’s performance as “a real gun” as it was “created by the same technicians that made i30 N and the i20 N.”
The all-new KONA N SUV embodies a powerful road presence and driving fun that is true to N brand, and its dynamic driving spirit is clearly expressed by its sporty design.
The Elantra N is a high-performance variant of the All New Elantra. It adds strong, dynamic driving capability and aggressive design elements on top of the sporty standard model.
Elantra N’s flat power engine is mated with an 8-speed wet dual clutch transmission (DCT), delivering maximum output of 280 horsepower (ps) and maximum torque of 40 kgf•m. With N Grin Shift (NGS), the boost pressure increases, temporarily enhancing output up to 290 ps. As a result, Elantra N achieves a top speed of 250 km/h and runs 0-100 km/h in just 5.3 seconds.
In Elantra N, there are features implemented for the first time in an N model that also stands out. For the first time ever in a Hyundai, Elantra N applies an integrated drive axle (IDA), inspired by technology used in WRC rally cars. By integrating drive shaft, wheel hub and bearing, weight reduction (of 1.7kg) enables a ‘lighter and stronger’ car. Elantra N adds a special feature for driving pleasure. N Sound Equalizer (NSE) is a virtual engine sound that allows the driver to hear a more realistic and dynamic engine sound while driving.
Hyundai’s N vehicles are known as ‘high-performance cars.’ High performance cars are equipped with powerful and more intricate engines and parts. Most performance cars consequently share higher purchasing prices and operating/maintenance costs.
Hyundai N’s vehicles fulfill the standards as high-performance cars in a relatively competitive price. The specs of Hyundai's N performance cars are proof that these cars are built to perform no matter what kind of road you're driving on.
Hyundai N vehicles are based off of 3 main pillars
The N-Line and N trims focus on the driving experience, with powerful turbocharged engines paired to dual-clutch automatics or classic manual transmissions.
“N brand will always be focused on delivering driving fun – no matter what technology is under the hood”
-Thomas Schemera, Executive VP and Head of Customer Experience Division
Efforts of N Brand to Reach Out to Customers
In addition to launching a solid N model lineup, various efforts are being made to make the N brand more prominent to customers.
Not only the N model, but various lineups such as the Sonata N Line, Elantra N Line, Tucson N Line, and Kona N Line were also announced.
The N-Line is not as performant as the N, but features a race-inspired design and enhanced performance than a standard model.
The recently announced i20 N-Line in India is also gaining popularity.

Hyundai India incorporated the world of animation and VFX to present the car and its personality.
The Source of 'N' Technology
Date: June 5~6, 2021
Location: Nürburgring Nordscheleife, Germany
The secret behind the global popularity of the N model is its solid technology. Hyundai N took part in the 49th ADAC TOTAL 24h Race at Nürburgring, the hardest endurance race in the world. Elantra-N TCR debuted in NBR24 and won the TCR class of the 24h race. Also, the new i20-N won the SP2T class of single participation without any trouble.
In addition, together with its Motorsport division, N brand has logged victories at multiple races, including the FIA World Rally Championship, TCR International Series, Pirelli World Challenge, IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge.
The Three Highlighted N Vehicles
The Potential and Vision of N
Hyundai N discovers far beyond what’s possible today and presents the discovery through various concept vehicles.
The line is eager to develop even further with new visions and concepts.
Hyundai’s N performance division has already been exploring uses for battery-electric and hydrogen fuel-cell technology for some time, having unveiled an 872bhp hydrogen-powered racecar concept called the N 2025 Vision Gran Turismo, powered by the world’s first mass-produced hydrogen fuel-cell, in 2015. The Hyundai N 2025 Vision Gran Turismo perfectly encapsulates the passion surrounding the high-performance technology that goes into “N” and offers a glimpse of the next-generation of high-performance vehicles.
Now, Hyundai N will apply some of that technology and lessons from motorsport to the Vision FK, with the potential for a production version to compete in motorsport down the line.
The “Vision FK”, unveiled by Hyundai Motor Group at Hydrogen Wave, is the world’s first high-performance hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle that combines an eco-friendly hydrogen fuel cell system and a PE system for electric vehicles. We have looked into the innovative technology featured by the Vision FK and its impact on future mobility.
It is highly anticipating to see how much more the N brand will expand and develop in the near future.
Please look forward to many more achievements to come for Hyundai’s N brand.
