Understanding of Car Interior Design.

December HTA : Understanding of Car Design Part 2 (Interior Design)

Episode 1. What is Car Interior Design?

Interior design is a combination of many things, such as usability and comfort. Therefore, it is less easy to grasp the value of an interior design at a glance compared to an exterior design.

It was not until the 1990s that people focused on the interior design.

Along with the advancements in technologiesas people began to spend more time behind the wheels, interior design became equally important.

The focus is now on ‘ease of use’ whereas in the past, the focus was on ‘ease of manufacture’.

Episode 2. Scope and Terminology

The interior design can be divided into three categories: instrument panel, seat and trims.

The instrument panel has all the devices for controlling the car. There are four main layouts of the instrumental panel: horizontal, vertical, driver-oriented, and cockpit.

Seat stitching line, colors, materials, and patterns all reflect the customers’ tastes.

The door trim is the first thing a person sees when getting into and out of the car. It is an important part that can affect the car’s image.

Episode 3. Human Machine Interface

HMI (Human Machine Interface) is the interaction between humans and machines. It refers to all actions we take within the car to make it operate and all movements we make to control devices

The three elements of HMI are:

1. Allocation and Grouping : the interface is separated among the reach zone according to the priority of operation in order to minimize visual distractions.

2. Intuitiveness : making a design that is easy to control and intuitive for a driver to understand while driving. Intuitive design should allow the driver to understand the function without confusion and not distract drivers.

3. Simplicity : It is important to design in a way that necessary controls are easily operated. The same goes to the digital cluster and the HUD. These functions are directly correlated to the driver’s safety, so it is crucial that the information is delivered accurately without pulling away the driver’s attention.

Episode 4. Habitability

Cowl top is an important aspect that determines the inside space. It is the point where the windshield starts at the top of the firewall which separates the engine and the interior. Angle of the glass and the size of the interior is determined by where the cowl top is located.

In recently released vehicles, the inside space has been increased as the cowl top panel has been moved forward compared to the past.

The wheelbase has a large influence on the inside space, especially for the rear seats. Recent vehicles trend toward having a larger wheelbase. Technological advancements allowed more freedom in designing engine space and the suspension.

The location of the powertrain can also change the inside space.

1. Front engine, rear wheel drive system has relatively high efficiency in space usability by disturbing weight 50:50.

2. Front engine, front wheel drive increases space usability by reducing engine space but becomes front-heavy.

3. Front engine, four-wheel drive puts importance in acceleration and driving safety but takes away from space usage and practicality.

4. Mid-ship engine, four-wheel drive used in sports cars gives the best driving performance but has the worst practicality and space usage.

AHP (Accelerator Heel Point) is the point where the driver’s heel touches the floor. Based on this point, the center of your hips, the angle of your back, and the corresponding angle of the steering wheel all change. The sense of space that a driver feels changes according to the AHP.

Detailed calculations are done to secure rear seats. The major points are knee, leg, and head roomThe seats are also very important. Thicker seats may be more comfortable but as they take up more space, therefore appropriate thickness is necessaryand the seats should evenly distribute the body weight.

Episode 5. Aesthetic Impression

The interior of a vehicle is made up of a much greater variety of lines and surfaces than the exteriorKnowing geometric forms is crucial in understanding the interior design.

Knowing the characteristics of topological shapes can allow the dealer to explain more thoroughly about the design.

Bad Example) The car has a nice design.

Good Example) By applying the same design to the instrument panel and the steering wheel, it gives a more poised and well-organized feeling.

Topological modeling can be used as a method for making depth or volume in a space.

Episode 6. Features of Hyundai’s Interior Design

Hyundai’s design is famous for setting much more rigorous standards than its competitors. The checklist above leads to higher costumer satisfaction.

Hyundai possesses the largest scale design research center in the industry and the finest internal designer. Hyundai constantly builds know-how by carrying out design processes on a variety of car types.

Even entry-level vehicles are given luxurious interiors.

Big inner space is a signature feature of Hyundai’s interiors. Hyundai not only makes the largest interior space among the class but also has lots of know-how to make the space look even bigger. In addition, each model of cars is characterized by having a design with personality.

Episode 7. How to Present Car Interior Design

Identifying customer’s needs and addressing those values are the most needed aspect of an effective presentation. We must also provide opportunities to let them experience the interior through all senses.
